Pablo Picasso lived from 1881 to 1973. He was born in Spain and he was a painter as well as a sculptor. Between 1900 and 1902, Picasso took three trips to Paris and decided to live there in 1904. In that time, he was influenced by the city's bohemian street life. Then, he went through his Blue Period, which was called this because he would paint in many different shades of blue, like in the painting shown above. This painting is composed of many different colors of blue. The mother is carrying a newborn child in her arms and it looks like she is kissing it. The family isn't wearing any shoes. The father has his hand on his young child's head. The child looks like he is nude, because he is painted with white, unlike his family, which are draped in blue. This painting is of a poor family who is very depressed and have seemed to encounter many hardships. The father of the family, who is usually suposed to be the strong one, seems to have been "broken" from slavery, slightly hanging his head. Blue colors were used in this painting to represent the state of depression that the family is witnessing. They seem to have nothing but each other and the love that they have for one another. This picture makes me feel that people in today's life take for granted how good they have it compared to some people in this world and in the our past. I like this painting because it makes me feel many different things. I am glad that I have so much to be thankful for, but at the same time, I feel pity for the family and the fact that they are struggling so much.
